Becoming a tutor at OCEM education
At OCEM, we’re dedicated to creating better opportunities for SEMH children and young people, who struggle in mainstream education. Unlocking potential, one student at a time, through tailored tuition and wellbeing support.
We can only fulfil our mission because of the tutors who help us support SEMH students through personalised education, emotional guidance and consistent advocacy.

Your impact as a tutor
Our SEMH students require experienced and committed tutors. They often have complex emotional and behavioural challenges that take priority.
It’s likely that the children come from backgrounds lacking facilities to fulfil basic needs. Including nutritional, emotional and social development. Therefore, it’s crucial that we tailor learning approaches, create a safe and supportive environment and advocate for their needs. Upon fostering positive relationships built on trust and resilience, we can begin to fill educational gaps. It can be a long process, but extremely rewarding and worthwhile. Your dedication results in a better future for each child, both academically and personally.
One of the key things you’ll do as a tutor is improve attendance.
Attendance is an important measure of how engaged a young person is. Regular attendance not only reflects a student's commitment to learning but also their ability to cope and engage with the educational environment. When students attend classes consistently, they are more likely to keep up with the curriculum, participate in classroom activities, and interact with peers, which enhances their overall learning experience.
Our success can be seen in the table below.
Mainstream attendance% OCEM attendance%
Student A 5% 82%
Student B 0% 53%
Student C 39% 83%
Student D 48% 100%
Why join OCEM?
OCEM offers competitive rates, paid weekly. We provide comprehensive insurance and access to a supportive community. The biggest reward is creating positive change in SEMH children and young people’s lives. And let’s not forget, you’ll be a part of an organisation whose impact is growing every day.
We hire permanent, casual and self-employed tutors. They work flexibly on an outreach basis in the community or in one of our hubs dotted across London and Essex (and hopefully more places in the future). The nature of this job and the children’s development requires a high standard of professionalism, empathy and reliability. We also place a strong focus on safeguarding to ensure student wellbeing.
“Our tutors are excellent with SEMH needs and their empathetic approach to teaching has enabled our young people to have a voice and feel heard and most importantly, engage in their education.” - Janine, Essex Lead
